The U.S. Department of Transportation maintains that stricter rules for carrying small lithium-ion batteries on passenger jets and air freighters are needed to improve air safety, despite opposition by an industry group as well as federal government data that appears to show the opposite.

Researchers at Stanford University have developed an electrode that can be used to make more energy-dense lithium-sulfur batteries. If issues surrounding life-cycle deterioration can be addressed, the battery could resolve performance and safety issues limiting the spread of longer-lasting batteries in hybrid and electric vehicles.
Improved batteries that deliver significantly more energy, last longer, and are safer are thus the subject of current research. Bruno Scrosati and Jusef Hassoun at the University of Rome have now developed a highly promising approach to a new variety of lithium-ion battery, which, as the researchers report in the journal Angewandte Chemie, may fulfill these criteria ("A High-Performance Polymer Tin Sulfur Lithium Ion Battery").
