Lithium miner Galaxy in sales deal with Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Corporation (TSE:8058) has agreed to buy 30 per cent of battery grade lithium carbonate from Galaxy Resources Ltd's (ASX:GXY) Mt Cattlin mine in Western Australia. Lithium is used in electric vehicles.

Galaxy Resources signs Off-take Agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan

Emerging lithium producer Galaxy Resources (ASX: GXY) has penned an Off-take Agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation for a significant proportion of its battery grade lithium carbonate production. The agreement involves long term off-take sales and distribution of Galaxy’s product to the Japanese market. Mitsubishi Corporation is Japan's largest general trading company with more than 200 bases of operations in approximately 80 countries worldwide. Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Motors and battery manufacturer GS Yuasa formed a JV Company in December 2007 called Lithium Energy Japan to manufacture and supply large capacity and high performance lithium ion batteries to the automobile sector.

Western Lithium Receives Plan of Operation Permit for Nevada Lithium Project

Western Lithium Corporation (TSX VENTURE:WLC)(PINK SHEETS:WLCDF) has received approval for its plan of operation for its Kings Valley Lithium Project in Nevada, USA.

Western Lithium's plan of operation, which was submitted in May 2008, was recently approved by both the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection. The work program will include an extensive drilling and trenching exploration program to further delineate the resources of Western Lithium's Stage I Lens, test suitable mining methods for the project and obtain bulk samples for use in pilot plant studies. The plan also included an environmental assessment.

Project targeting lithium in Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia housing a new government project could produce at least 5.4 million tons of lithium, the U.S. Geological Survey says.

The Boston Globe said Monday if the U.S. agency's estimations are correct, the amount of lithium that could be extracted from the salt flat would easily surpass the United States' 410,000 tons of current lithium reserves.

The Future of the Lithium Market, Part I

In a presentation at the inaugural Lithium Supply & Markets Conference held in Santiago in January 2009[1], I suggested three factors to determine whether lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries will be adopted by the global automobile industry in its transition to electric propulsion, namely: the oil market, technological development and resistance to change.
In the first part of this contribution I review and extend this argument in light of some important recent events that have occurred in the world economy.
